Fantasy Football Video: Would a A.J. Brown trade unlock DeVonta Smith's potential as a No. 1?
· Yahoo Sports
We’re heading into the thick of the offseason as free agency opens next Monday while the 2026 NFL Draft is set for the end of April. We’re constantly trying to decipher trade rumors, what makes sense and what doesn’t. One such rumor is the Philadelphia Eagles looking to move WR A.J. Brown after a tumultuous season between the two in 2025.

If Brown were to be moved, that would open up the door for WR DeVonta Smith to take over as the de factor No. 1 option for QB Jalen Hurts in the passing game. Matt Harmon and Joel Smyth discussed the possibility of a Brown trade unlocking Smith’s potential on the latest episode of the Yahoo Fantasy Forecast.
Harmon wastes no time by saying that Smith can absolutely be “that guy” if the Eagles move Brown. It reminds Harmon of the situation in Seattle last year, when the Seahawks opted to deal DK Metcalf to the Steelers, clearing the way for Jaxon Smith-Njigba to be the top option in the Seattle passing game.
We all know what JSN was able to do this past season given that opportunity. As for Smith, he’s been consistent in his five NFL seasons but hasn’t popped off the stat sheet yet. Smith has at least 800 receiving yards and four TDs in every campaign, but hasn’t gotten past 1,200 yards or double-digit TDs. You’d think a Brown trade out of Philly would mean a career year for the Alabama product.
Smyth chimes in saying that the Eagles are reportedly asking way too much in return for Brown, which could put a snag in any trade talks. If that asking price becomes more realistic, however, we could see Brown moved. But Smyth doesn’t think that will necessarily be a plus for the veteran receiver as the Eagles offer a solid passer in Hurts.
After posting nearly 1,500 yards in each of his first two seasons in Philly, Brown has barely gone over 1,000 yards in back-to-back campaigns with seven scores in each season.
