Boston put an emphasis on improving its pitching staff this season, and the team made some intriguing under-the-radar additions. One name to watch, according to Red Sox insider Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic, is Tayron Guerrero, who’s throwing over 100 MPH and could reach the MLB this season.

“The Red Sox signed the 35-year-old to a minor-league deal this offseason after he pitched in Japan last year and dominated in the Dominican Winter League this offseason, striking out nine in 10 1/3 innings,” McCaffrey wrote in an article published on Friday. “This spring, he has pitched well in a small sample, with five scoreless innings across four appearances, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out five. His elite extension, thanks to his massive frame, makes his 98 mph average fastball appear even faster.

“A journeyman for much of his career, having last pitched in the majors in 2019 for the Miami Marlins, Guerrero has a chance to impact the Red Sox this season. He topped out at 100.6 mph this spring and, if he maintains form, could be a strong arm in Triple-A Worcester whom the Red Sox call up at some point this season.”

The 6-foot-8 right-hander can provide Alex Cora and the Red Sox a hard-throwing weapon out of the bullpen. However, it’s unlikely he will crack the Opening Day roster, but instead, could be someone who is called up should injuries arise.

Guerrero has appeared in 113 MLB games in his career. Meanwhile, in spring training with the Red Sox, he’s pitched five scoreless innings, which has helped his case to potentially be a call-up during the season.
