Zach McCambley is coming back to the Marlins' organization.

The Athletic's Matt Gelb reported the news on X on Sunday morning.

The key to this maneuver is the Rule 5 Draft. This offseason, McCambley was left off the Marlins' 40-man roster, so the Phillies were able to pick him in that draft.

But when McCambley didn't earn a job on the Phillies' Opening Day roster, they had to return him to the Marlins, because that's part of the conditions for a Rule 5 Draft pick.

So the 6-foot-2 right-handed pitcher McCambley is back in Miami's organization, likely to start the season in Triple-A.

This spring, McCambley did what he could for the Phillies. He had a 1.23 ERA in 7.1 innings pitched.

Philadelphia may have been concerned with the six walks and only four strikeouts in that amount of action, though.

McCambley has been solid in recent years in the minor leagues, which made him a worthy try to see if he could crack the Phillies' bullpen.

Last year at Triple-A Jacksonville, McCambley had a 3.32 ERA in 36 outings. He also has a 2.11 ERA in 11 outings at Double-A Pensacola.

His career minor league strikeout rate is 10.8 punchouts per nine innings. His walk rate last year in the minors was a manageable 3.2 per nine innings.

It seems like McCambley will get an MLB chance eventually. It just doesn't seem like it'll be with the Phillies. Maybe the Marlins will eventually benefit from this return of McCambley to their system.
