The 2026 MLB season is upon us.
While there will be 11 games on Thursday, March 26, which is generally considered "Opening Day," the season will actually start the night before. The New York Yankees will begin the year across the country, taking on the San Francisco Giants on "Opening Night" on Wednesday, March 25.
The Yankees are coming off a 94-68 season, and are largely running it back with the same team that got them to the 2025 ALDS, where they fell to the Toronto Blue Jays, who eventually went to the World Series. New York is favored to win the AL East, but a lot can happen over the course of a 162-game season, and the Yankees will have to stay healthy with both Carlos Rodon and Gerrit Cole starting the season on the IL.
The Giants missed the playoffs last season after finishing an even .500 with an 81-81 record. San Francisco's biggest offseason additions include Harrison Bader and Luis Arraez, who should help add consistency to the lineup. The Giants are still projected to struggle this season, given how good the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres are expected to be in the NL West.

6:30 p.m. -- Yankees manager Aaron Boone made the decision to bat reigning MVP Aaron Judge second in the Opening Day lineup. Judge will be followed by Cody Bellinger and Ben Rice, giving him plenty of protection in the lineup. Judge struggled in the back end of the World Baseball Classic, but will look to get right with the season starting.
6:00 p.m. -- Webb appeared in two starts for Team USA during the World Baseball Classic and will look to sustain that momentum into his Opening Day start for the Giants. He started 34 games last season and had a 15-11 record with a 3.22 ERA. The San Francisco ace struck out 224 batters, the third-most in MLB, in 207 innings.
5:45 p.m. -- Fried will be making his first Opening Day for the Yankees since signing with the franchise ahead of the 2025 season. The southpaw pitched in 32 games last year and tallied a career-best 19-5 record. He added a 2.86 ERA and struck out 189 batters in 195.1 innings of work.
5:30 p.m. -- The game will be broadcast on Netflix. As such, the platform is integrating its other content into the game's production. The first pitch is expected to be delivered by Thing from the show "Wednesday." It was expected to be a CGI first pitch, but pre-game, a Thing replica was seen waving from a skateboard while travelling the infield.
