3 Colts make list of top 2027 NFL free agents

ESPN's Matt Bowen is taking an early look ahead to the 2027 offseason and has put together his list of the top free agents from each position group. Included were three members of the Indianapolis Colts.

Let's take a closer look at who those players are.

RB Jonathan Taylor

Taylor put together yet another highly productive season in 2025. He finished the season with 1,585 rushing yards -- the third-most in football. He also led the league in total touchdowns. Taylor's success is what sets the ceiling for the Colts' offense. A strong run game helps open up the passing game.

He should be a contract extension candidate for the Colts, which would prevent him from becoming a free agent.

What Bowen had to say: "One of the league's premier runners, Taylor combines power, vision and home run juice to rack up big-time production."

LG Quenton Nelson

The 2025 season was another very good one for Nelson as well. Among all guards this season, Nelson ranked fourth in pass-blocking efficiency and fourth in run-blocking grade. He was named a second-team All-Pro as well.

Like Taylor, Nelson should be a contract extension candidate to prevent him from hitting the open market.

What Bowen had to say: "Nelson's tone-setting play demeanor would be a fit for any O-line room in the league, and he's still producing high-level tape. His 95.5% pass block win rate ranked seventh among guards last season. Plus, he can easily displace defenders in the run game."

IDL DeForest Buckner

Buckner missed time last season with a neck injury. However, when on the field, he remained highly productive against both the run and pass, ranking 21st among defensive tackles in PFF's pass-rush win rate metric and tied for 16th in run stop rate.

Coming off the neck injury, Buckner is entering his age 32 season.

What Bowen had to say: "Buckner's sack totals and pass rush win rate have slipped over the past two seasons in Indianapolis. However, he can fit in a variety of NFL fronts with his powerful traits and 6-foot-7, 295-pound frame."
