3 Baltimore Orioles Takeaways From Opening Day
· Yahoo Sports
The Baltimore Orioles kick started their 2026 campaign with a 2-1 victory against the Minnesota Twins on opening day.
Baltimore was led by a dominant pitching performance from Trevor Rogers, who provided seven innings of scoreless baseball. The offense would eventually put up some runs, as they tacked on two in the seventh inning courtesy of Tyler O'Neill and Blaze Alexander.

Today's victory will be the first of many for Baltimore, as they are expected to be one of the better teams in the American League. However, it's never too early to lay my expectations and give some feedback on today's opening day performance.
With that being said, here are my three main takeaways from Baltimore's opening day victory against Minnesota.

Trevor Rogers Is An All-Star Caliber PitcherWhat we saw out of Trevor Rogers in his season debut was simply fantastic. Rogers gave Baltimore seven innings of scoreless baseball, while only allowing three hits and striking out five batters. Rogers' ability to eat innings will prove to be pivotal for Baltimore as the season continues. Although it's a small sample size, Rogers displayed that his 1.81 ERA last season wasn't a fluke. If he can continue to pitch at this elite of a level, there's no excuse as to why Rogers shouldn't be an all-star for the first time since his 2021 season with the Miami Marlins.

Ryan Helsley is Everything Baltimore Needed and MoreWhen it was announced in August 2025 that Felix Bautista would miss a majority of the 2026 season due to injury, it sent Baltimore fans into a panic. A team that had one of the worst bullpens in baseball last season will now be without their all-star closer for 2026. However, Baltimore's front office had a plan.
Insert Ryan Helsley.
On Opening Day, Helsley delivered his first save for Baltimore as he only gave up one hit and struck out three batters. Helsley topped out at 101.9 mph and debuted his devastating splitter that he was working on in the off-season. Although his lack of command can raise some heart rates, he is one of the best closers in baseball when commanding the zone, and that was on full display today.

Adley Rutschman was one of the most talented prospects of all-time, and as a switch-hitting catcher with strong defense, his first overall selection for Baltimore was a no brainer.
On Opening Day, we started to see why Baltimore selected Rutschman so high just seven years ago.
Rutschman went 2-for-4 with a single and a double, marking the first multi-hit game for Baltimore this season. Rutschman displayed his ability to bat from both sides of the plate, as he hit his single left handed, and his double right handed. A strong Opening Day performance from Rutschman indicates that he will bounce back in big fashion for Baltimore in 2026.
Baltimore Orioles Catcher Adley Rutschman (35) |Overall, today's performance was encouraging, especially as Baltimore and their fans aren't used to seeing such brilliant pitching performances on Opening Day. The offense will come along, but all we can do until then is just sit back and enjoy the show.
