Mumbai, April 3: Western Railway has sanctioned a new coaching depot between Curry Road and Lower Parel at an estimated cost of Rs 98 crore, a move expected to remove a key infrastructure bottleneck and enable the introduction of more train services from Mumbai Central and Dadar in the coming years.

The proposed facility will include two pit lines for maintenance and inspection of train rakes and seven stabling lines for parking trains. Formal approval for the pit lines was granted on March 31, and the work is expected to be completed within 15 months. Approval for the stabling lines is currently in the final stage, railway officials said.

Addressing capacity constraints

Officials said the new depot is strategically important as the existing pit lines at Mumbai Central are operating at full capacity with no scope for expansion. This has limited Western Railway’s ability to introduce new long-distance trains from Mumbai Central and Dadar terminals.

The new depot is located around 2 km from Mumbai Central and about 2.5 km from Dadar, making it operationally convenient to serve both terminals. The facility will improve train maintenance, cleaning and overnight stabling capacity, freeing up existing pit lines for additional train services.

With Western Railway expanding its fleet, including Vande Bharat trains, AC local services and 15-coach suburban trains, the new coaching depot is expected to provide crucial operational capacity for future expansion of services.

Railways highlight infrastructure push

Over the past year, we have spent nearly ₹22,000 crore in capital expenditure to enhance passenger facilities. In addition, construction of new depots and corridors is underway to increase the number of suburban as well as mail and express train services, and our target is to complete these projects soon.
