The superfan – real name Joy Chauke – has come under fire after criticising the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture over his decision to halt sponsored trips.
MAMA JOY CLAPS BACK AT WORLD CUP DEMAND
Over the Easter weekend, Mama Joy’s name trended over the X app after she criticised Gayton McKenzie for not sponsoring her a trip to the FIFA World Cup, which takes place in June.
Last year, the Minister of Sport announced that the department would no longer be funding superfan trips around the world.
Gayton cheekily responded that Mama Joy’s French husband could foot the bill instead in a tweet that upset the soccer supporter.
She responded: “Behind you @BafanaBafana, with or without Gayton McKenzie. Live or on TV. The World Cup is just around the corner.
She added: “It is not a romantic trip, my husband will pay for a romantic trip. Watch the space”.

Mama Joy also clapped back at social media users who accused her of being “entitled”.
She responded to one fan: “Look who is talking, you failed [Moroka] Swallows fans”.
To another, she responded: “When you see me face to face, you want pictures…, why?”

WHO PAID FOR MAMA JOY’S TRIPS?
Speaking on Metro FM on Monday, 6 April, Mama Joy was questioned about who funded her trips to sporting tournaments such as the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the Rugby World Cup in France, the Women’s Rugby World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, and various matches at AFCON and WAFCON.
The sports fan denied that the Department of Sport sponsored her expenses, despite a damning 2024 report that it spent at least R1.3 million on her and another, Botha Msila, to travel to France in 2023.
Mama Joy brazenly claimed that President Cyril Ramaphosa invited her to the Fifa Women’s World Cup in 2019, paying for her trip “from his pocket”.

GAYTON MCKENZIE’S PROMISE TO FANS
Despite publicly rejecting Mama Joy, Gayton McKenzie has vowed to secure private sponsorship for a handful of ardent sports fans.
I think we should have each club nominate the best and most consistent supporter for a trip to WC, someone who rarely misses a game. I will start calling sponsors when I land 🕺🏽🕺🏽🕺🏽🕺🏽🕺🏽🕺🏽🕺🏽🕺🏽 pic.twitter.com/ko25nIBCHS

This follows his earlier claims this year that he would send 50 individuals to the tournament, which will be hosted in Mexico, Canada and the US.
Speaking to a crowd at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, he said: “You’ve got the Minister for Sport, the ‘Minister of Happiness’, a minister that makes things happen. Let me tell you there’s going to be fan parks, there’s going to be competitions.
“We are even running a competition where 50 of the ‘Face of Africa’ can go to the World Cup. So people, you must put your face there, even if it’s a guy or woman … Our women here are more beautiful than those women (overseas), that is a fact.
He continued: “We’re going to have competitions of people that can dance, people that can make food.
“We are taking artists, dancers, podcasters, so that everybody can get the feel of what’s happening. They are not going on holiday, they are going to go and make sure the people there must know what’s happening.
“You are going to see a movie come this one. I’m a minister that makes things happen”.
