‘I can’t wear fakes’: Gayton, Studio 88 reacts to Bafana kit criticism

Gayton has cautioned fans against buying fake.
GAYTON MCKENZIE, STUDIO 88, RESPONDS TO ‘FAKE KIT’ CLAIMS
Over the weekend, Gayton McKenzie posted a picture of himself wearing Bafana Bafana’s green and gold away kit, sponsored by Adidas.
The Minister of Sport, Art and Culture revealed that he had purchased the jersey and two others at a Studio 88 store in Sandton.
Gayton even went so far as to post his receipt, which amounted to over R4 500.
“I don’t do fake”, he tweeted of his Bafana Bafana jersey.. He added that he had verified the item’s authenticity with Adidas.
In another tweet, he posted: “I cannot be wearing fake shirts whilst encouraging people to go buy original shirts. You would have written headlines calling me Minister of Fakes”.
Speaking to TimesLive, Studio 88 – which has long been plagued by rumours that it sells counterfeit merchandise – confirmed that all its stock is original.
Customer care team leader Jayson Irwin said: “We do not sell, accept or otherwise deal with counterfeit goods or factory variants.
He added: “We take these allegations very seriously.
“We would like to assure our customers and the public that we are committed to maintaining the highest standards of quality, authenticity and integrity across all our products.”

Last month, Adidas, which returned as a South African Football Association (SAFA) sponsor for the next three years, revealed its new kit for the 2026/2027 season. The kits will be worn by Bafana Bafana at the Fifa World Cup, which takes place between 11 June 2026 and 19 July 2026 in three host countries: Canada, Mexico and the US.

The public have praised the green and gold away kit.Previously designed by Le Coq Sportif, the new look Bafana Bafana kit features a home jersey in yellow with green Adidas stripes on the side. The SAFA logo and South Africa’s national emblem – the protea flower – accompany the Adidas logos on the front of the jersey.
