MIAMI – Jiri Prochazka hopes to adjust a long-standing problem with his strategy when he steps in the cage Saturday at UFC 327.
As many fight analysts have noted, Prochazka (32-5-1 MMA, 6-2 UFC) seems to take it slow early in fights before chaos ensues. At a pre-fight news conference Wednesday, Prochazka admitted this problem exists and confirmed a focus in this camp was to start throwing earlier when he gets in the cage with Carlos Ulberg at Kaseya Center.
"Start faster," Prochazka told MMA Junkie and other reporters. "That means, to me, to handle all these keys, how to unlock these primal aggressions inside myself to go there to the fight to the second round, to start the first round like the second round. This is something what we, the team, are focused on – to not start slowly, (taking) too long watching the opponent. I don't like that. As soon as I can start in the fight, then I can deliver a win."
Prochazka has the chance to win UFC gold for the second time. Since his title reign, he's come up short in his two attempts. Both were against Alex Pereira. The task in front of him Saturday won't be easy. Prochazka praised the abilities of Ulberg (13-1 MMA, 9-1 UFC) but said the New Zealander's skill set might play into his hands.
"For sure, I like this matchup because Carlos is a great standup fighter," Prochazka said. "I like to fight in the standup or whenever we go in the fight. ... He's proved that he's a really good striker. In movement, he has really good movement, precise punches, and I think in the standup from all my opponents, Ulberg with his style is very specific, very systematic. He's really somebody I need right now to face, to little push my standup up because it's starting in the standup."
