Kyle Larson is swimming in strange waters these days.

He carries last year’s NASCAR Cup Series championship with him, yet he also carries a winless streak that has become increasingly burdensome and mysterious. Larson’s last Cup victory occurred May 11, 2025, at Kansas Speedway in a race that he dominated, leading 221 of the 267 laps.

Larson isn’t in Kansas any more.

Since that bright day, he has failed to win in 31 consecutive races, a stretch that reaches across almost a year.

The good news? Larson and the rest of the Cup field race at Bristol Motor Speedway this week.

By many measures, Bristol is Larson’s top track. He has three wins, three seconds, eight top fives, and 11 top 10s on the half-mile, where he has led 1,762 laps. His second-best laps-led track is Darlington with 1,070 laps. Since the arrival of the NextGen car, Larson has led more Bristol laps (946) than any other driver. Second place—Ty Gibbs at 440—isn’t close.

Why have Larson and Bristol worked well together?

“We have a feel for the pace—the pace being really fast,” he said. “Moving around and navigating traffic efficiently. The groove is changing. I can see that and how the line is affecting my car. You can create a lot of different angles and stuff.”

Larson’s Cup winless streak hangs in the air, but it hasn’t plunged him into a pit of frustration. Scoring a surprising grab of the Cup championship in Phoenix was more than a bit of salve, of course, and he has continued to score success after success in sprint-car racing across the country.

“Running dirt races and getting wins in that makes it seem like it’s not that long ago that we won,” Larson said, “but it’s been almost a year. I don’t know. I don’t feel like we’re that bad. Ultimately, celebrating the championship in Phoenix felt like a win in a lot of ways, but you want to get back to victory lane.

“We’re working as hard as we ever have as a group. We want to win. It’s just gotten tough for whatever reason. We have some good tracks coming up. Hopefully, we can execute. Sometimes it looks like we’ve made winning look easy, but it’s not. We’ve got to keep working at it.

“We could have won four or five times in this time span of not winning—maybe even more. It just hasn’t happened. You can’t lose focus on the process and keep working hard.”

Despite the streak, Larson is tied for eighth in the point standings, with a top five and four top-10 finishes.
