The New York Mets made a lot of roster moves this past offseason, and those moves led to a massive overhaul of the roster.

Freddy Peralta, Bo Bichette, Jorge Polanco, Marcus Semien, and Luis Robert Jr. were all added to try to turn things around following a rough 2025 collapse.

But, after two weeks of the 2026 MLB season, the Mets might already regret letting Pete Alonso walk. Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report revealed why, identifying three reasons why the Mets might be regretting this decision.

"New York Mets: Letting Pete Alonso walk in free agency," Kelly writes. "While Alonso hasn't started quickly with the Orioles, neither have Bo Bichette or Jorge Polanco for the Mets."

Kelly points to the struggles of Bichette and Polanco to begin the season as big reasons why the Mets should regret their decision to let Alonso walk.

Polanco is hitting .200 with one RBI and a .564 OPS. Fortunately, Mark Vientos has stepped up as a key first baseman, hitting .370 with one home run, five RBIs, and a .956 OPS.

If it weren't for Vientos turning things around, this Alonso departure would be a lot worse. But, it's still rough, especially with Bichette hitting just .222 with a .505 OPS to begin the season.

Alonso is hitting .188 with one homer and three RBIs to go with a .556 OPS, which isn't great either. But there's a reason beyond simply his on-field production why the Mets could've used him this season.

Bringing the franchise leader in homers back for the long-term would've been a good decision from the Mets. He could've cemented himself as an all-time Mets great, but now he's simply carved out a good career with the franchise before he left this offseason.

The Mets could've kept Alonso and had him make the case for being an inner-circle Mets legend. But instead they let him walk, which is already a regretful decision.

And now, with the struggles of Bichette and Polanco, two players meant to replace him, this decision to let Alonso looks even more like one the Mets regret from this past offseason.
