The Boston Red Sox have gotten off to a poor start this year, and their offense is a big reason why. Many of their top hitters have opened the season in a funk, including Roman Anthony.

Coming off an impressive rookie season and a dominant World Baseball Classic, Anthony had high expectations coming into the year. Some even predicted him to win AL MVP.

Instead, he's gotten off to a rough start both at the plate and in the field. Offensively, he's slashing just .217/.308/.348 with one home run, two RBI and 16 strikeouts in 12 games. Defensively, he's already committed a pair of errors in just seven games in the outfield.

Anthony looks a little out of sorts right now, but Craig Breslow isn't worried about the 21-year-old outfielder.

"Roman's an incredibly talented guy," Breslow said during his appearance on WEEI on Thursday. "So, pressure versus expectations given what this guy's capable of doing, we got a ton of confidence in Roman. He's gonna be fine, he's doing the work to get back on track."

Some, including Ken Rosenthal and Jared Carrabis, have expressed concerns that the Red Sox are putting too much pressure on Anthony at this stage of his career. With Alex Bregman and Rafael Devers gone, Boston is expecting him to carry the lineup and be the face of the franchise by default, even though he's still learning and adjusting to the Major Leagues.

Anthony started slowly last year, too, and needed a few weeks to get going, so perhaps that's the case this year as well. The talent is still there, so it should only be a matter of time until he starts heating up.
