Rumours swirl around Marquez’s future as links to Honda return refuse to go away

There are still people in the paddock who believe Marc Marquez could turn down a contract extension with Ducati and head back to Honda from the 2027 MotoGP season.

Ducati and Marquez are currently trying to sort out the details of a new contract beyond this season. The seven-time premier class champion will be a free agent at the end of the year, but talks between both sides have hit a standstill, despite expectations that he would’ve already agreed a deal by now.

There were suggestions back in February that Marquez had already put pen to paper on a deal with Ducati through 2028. But it’s now believed he’s pushing for more flexibility, requesting a 1+1-year contract instead.

Ducati has confirmed that they’re prepared to wait as long as it takes for Marquez to get ready. They’re well aware of his track record, which includes multiple world championships before his switch from Repsol Honda in 2023.

Honda’s plans for Tech3 could keep the door open for a 2027 Marc Marquez return

One factor that could be weighing on Marc Marquez as he holds off on signing a new deal with Ducati is the possibility of heading back to Honda. Reports earlier this year suggested that Honda had put forward an offer exceeding €20m (£17.5m) for a two-year contract beginning in 2027.

According to MOW, some believe the deal is already done and just waiting to be made public. But others around the paddock still see a Honda return as very much in play.

Honda’s interest in making Tech3 their second satellite team by 2027 is another element fueling talk of Marquez’s return after three years away. The team are aiming to field six factory-spec bikes when the 850cc era begins and are trying to lure Tech3 away from KTM.

If Tech3 accept, it would give Honda another spot on the grid, which could free up space for David Alonso. While reports indicate that both Alonso and Fabio Quartararo are set to join in 2027, those plans might change if Marquez comes back into the fold.

If that happens, Honda would need another satellite team to provide Alonso with a seat in MotoGP. It’s already well known that Quartararo has agreed to leave Yamaha for Honda, and LCR still have Diogo Moreira and Johann Zarco under contract.

But money alone won’t decide where he goes next. If he does lean towards a return, Ducati may need more than just cash—they might need to convince him their new bike will be his best shot at success in 2027.
