Late this season, Olentangy Schools confirmed it had broadened an investigation into whether Marinelli submitted incorrect win-loss records for his wrestlers to improve their postseason seeding.
Marinelli was suspended for the Division I district tournament in 2025 for what the school district called an "inadvertent reporting error" over the same matter.
Marinelli recently completed his 19th season, guiding the Patriots to an eighth-place finish at state. It was Liberty’s 11th consecutive top-10 finish.
The Patriots captured 12 sectional titles and three district championships under Marinelli, who coached eight state champions.
A 1986 graduate of DeSales, Marinelli won the Division II state title at 119 pounds in 1986 and was a four-year letterwinner. He went on to wrestle for four seasons at Ohio State and was inducted into the DeSales Athletic Hall of Fame in 2014.
Before taking over at Liberty, Marinelli coach DeSales from 1993-2007, leading the Stallions to Division II state runner-up finishes in 2003 and 2000.
