Suarez was pitching against the Detroit Tigers, and to begin his tenure in Boston, the left-hander has had mixed results. Yet, he had the best start of the season as he went eight scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, and striking out four.
It was a dominant outing from Suarez, and he credits his rhythm for the recent success.
“The rhythm that I’ve had the last few starts has helped me to locate my pitches,” Suarez said postgame on Friday. “That’s a big part of it.”
Red Sox manager Alex Cora, meanwhile, felt like Suarez needed to get more reps, as pitching in the WBC hindered his build-up. So, Cora believes he’s just starting to pitch like his true self.
"For a finesse pitcher, you need reps,” Cora said about Suarez. “Velo was up today. Command was outstanding. The mix of pitches was great.”
With the shutout outing, Suarez is now 1-1 with a 3.22 ERA as he's now gone back-to-back starts without allowing a run.
"Although we weren’t able to produce much, we were able to come up with a win, and that’s huge,” Suarez said. “Today was a good team win, and we’re happy that we were able to start the homestand like this.”
Boston will return to the field on Saturday against the Tigers with the first pitch set at 4:10 p.m. ET.
