Chembur Metro Station In Mumbai Set For Early Launch As Line 2B Witnesses Low Ridership: Report
· Free Press Journal

Mumbai: In a strategic move to address low commuter turnout on the recently operational stretch of Metro Line 2B, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is likely to open the Chembur Metro station before June 2026. The authority has already completed construction and has applied for mandatory safety certification from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), with trials expected to begin shortly.

The move to open Chembur metro station comes in as the Diamond Garden to Mandalay section has witnessed a lukewarm response drawing only around 300 passengers daily, MMRDA told Loksatta. In a bid to improve ridership, MMRDA is now prioritising the launch of the Chembur station, part of the otherwise under-construction second phase between Diamond Garden and Saraswat Nagar, well ahead of its scheduled completion timeline of 2027.
Officials confirmed that the Chembur station is 100% complete and awaits CMRS clearance. Once safety approvals are granted, the station is likely to become operational by the end of May or early June. This will enable direct metro connectivity between Chembur and Mandalay, significantly enhancing accessibility in the eastern suburbs.

To facilitate seamless integration, MMRDA is constructing a pedestrian bridge linking the upcoming Chembur Metro station with the nearby V. N. Purav Marg–R. C. Marg monorail station. Work on this connector is underway.
Once operational, commuters will be able to switch easily between the metro and monorail networks, offering improved last-mile connectivity and potentially boosting footfall across both systems. Passengers travelling from Mandalay will be able to alight at Chembur and continue their journey towards Jacob Circle via monorail.

The early commissioning of Chembur station marks a significant step in optimising the network’s utility and addressing commuter demand in key transit corridors.
