Trump and the First Lady exchanged handshakes and brief remarks with the royal couple as they stopped for photographs on the red carpet in front of the world’s press. The quartet then retreated to a drawing room inside where they were served afternoon tea.
Charles and Camilla had earlier been welcomed at Joint Base Andrews by an honor guard and received flowers from children of British military families stationed in the U.S.
According to Buckingham Palace, the four-day state visit is set to “celebrate the historic connections and the modern bilateral relationship” between the U.K. and U.S., but it comes at a time where the alliance is under great strain.
There are numerous geopolitical tensions at play against the backdrop of the Iran war, the fallout of which has splintered the London-Washington relationship. Trump has repeatedly criticized British Prime Minister Keir Starmer over his refusal to become actively involved in the conflict.
In the weeks leading up to the state visit, there were calls for the trip to be cancelled, with U.K. lawmakers expressing worry over the heightened tensions.
Starmer, in response, said the “monarchy is an important reminder of the long-standing bonds and enduring relationship between our two countries which are far greater than anyone who occupies any particular office at any particular time.”

“He'll be very safe,” said Trump on Sunday regarding Charles’ visit after the incident. “They are so looking forward to being here.”
The royal couple will have a packed schedule in the U.S.
Following in the footsteps of his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, Charles will address a joint session of Congress on Tuesday. He’ll then be the guest of honor at the White House’s state banquet.
Charles and Camilla will also spend time in Virginia and New York, before heading off to the British overseas territory of Bermuda.
