According to the BBC , a witness said one stabbing occurred near some shops while the other happened outside a synagogue.

Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, the United Kingdom’s head of Counter Terrorism Policing, called the attack on the streets of London “horrifying.”

“My thoughts are with everyone who has been affected by what happened,” Taylor said in a statement .

Responding officers also attacked

Around 11:15 a.m. local time, police say the victims — 76 and 34 years old — suffered stab wounds in the attack and were sent to hospital to be treated. Officers responding to the incident were also attacked.

A Taser was used by police to subdue and arrest the 45-year-old suspect on suspicion of attempted murder, according to a video shared to social media platform X .

Metropolitan Police said the suspect has a history of serious violence and mental health issues and remains in custody.

“I can also confirm that this has now formally been declared a terrorist incident,” Taylor said.

“Our highly specialized teams of officers are working with the Metropolitan Police to progress the investigation quickly — and establish exactly what has happened.”

Taylor said investigators will determine if the stabbings were a deliberate attack on London’s Jewish community, adding he is particularly concerned because of other recent incidents .

“That concern will be felt not just in the capital, but in communities and homes across the U.K.,” he said.

“I want to make it clear that Counter Terrorism Policing and police forces up and down the country are mobilizing to provide additional support and reassurance, and request that the public are vigilant and stand alongside communities who may be feeling worried this evening.”

Rabbi wants ‘meaningful action’

Ephraim Mirvis, Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations in Britain, said on social media that “words of condemnation are no longer sufficient” following what he says was an antisemitic attack.

“This must be a moment that demands meaningful action from every institution, every community, every leader, and every decent person in our country,” he shared on X .

“This is a hatred that we must face down together.”

Officers’ bravery commended

Metropolitan Police Chief Mark Rowley commended the bravery of the officers who arrested the suspect.

“They confronted a man they believed to be a terrorist, who refused to show his hands, who was violent, and continued to pose a clear threat,” he told reporters at the scene.

“These were not armed officers and they feared he was carrying an explosive device.”

Rowley was asked if the Jewish community is safe in London and responded that he understands why people would be afraid.
