Red Sox get ‘good news’ on Roman Anthony’s wrist, but he’s day-to-day, not with team

DETROIT — The Red Sox received good news on the status of Roman Anthony on Tuesday.
Anthony’s trip back to Boston to see a hand specialist revealed that the outfielder has nothing more than a wrist sprain, interim manager Chad Tracy said. Anthony is day-to-day and at this point, not being placed on the injured list.

“As of right now, it looks like just a wrist sprain,” Tracy said at Comerica Park. “Outside of that, no update other than to say, right now, day-to-day. There’s nothing imminent as far as an IL (stint), but day-to-day. We’ll assess him over the next couple of days to see how he’s feeling.
Anthony left Monday’s win in the second inning after feeling pain on the top of his right hand when he fouled off a pitch in his first at-bat. X-rays in Detroit were negative but the Red Sox still wanted him to pay their specialist a visit to rule out a worse injury.
“We don’t see a break. We don’t see anything structural right now,” Tracy said. “There are still steps to take to make sure that he feels good and healthy.”
Asked if Anthony would return to Detroit to play before Boston’s series with the Tigers ends Wednesday night, Tracy said: “Probably not.”
“I don’t think, even with the news, he’s going to be in the lineup in the next couple of days,” he added.
The Red Sox’ unbalanced roster is well-equipped to handle a key outfielder missing a couple of games. Tracy still has Jarren Duran, Ceddanne Rafaela, Wilyer Abreu and Masataka Yoshida at his disposal as he plays a man short Tuesday. Against lefty Framber Valdez, Andruw Monasterio is the designated hitter with Yoshida sitting.
The Red Sox think they might have Anthony back by the time they start a home series against the Rays on Thursday, but they’re taking it day-by-day.
“Even with the sprain, it’s really going to still be reactive on how he’s feeling and how he’s progressing,” Tracy said. “That’s good news but we still have to see how he feels over the next couple days.”
