The Telegraph reports that Manchester United are looking into a deal for West Ham United midfielder Matheus Fernandes. The Portuguese star is expected to be available, especially if the Hammers are relegated.
The 21-year-old has his admirers and United could try to snap him up on the cheap. If that is their plan, it’s one Liverpool should absolutely hijack.
There is no greater need at Liverpool than a solid midfielder and Fernandes is one of those. He wins the ball, moves it on, and has consistently been doing that over the last couple of seasons.
Enough so that we pitched the idea of signing him a year ago as he went down with Southampton. One of the best tackling midfielders in the Premier League, Fernandes also completes around 87 per cent of his passes and is one of the most consistent dribblers in the position.
All in all, that’s exactly what Liverpool lack in the middle. Someone who can win the ball back and limit his mistakes on the ball.
The fact Fernandes does it at 21 is even better - a long-term option who would, at the very least, bring a dimension that no other Liverpool midfielder can offer.
So don’t let United snap him up! Fernandes should be a Liverpool player.
Matheus Fernandes: Situation Summary
West Ham Performance and Stats
As of 4 May 2026, Mateus Fernandes (often referred to as Matheus) has emerged as the standout performer in an otherwise difficult season for West Ham United. The 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder, who joined from Southampton for €46 million last summer, has recorded three goals and three assists in the Premier League. He played the full 90 minutes in a 3–1 defeat to Brentford on 2 May, maintaining his status as a permanent fixture in Nuno Espírito Santo’s midfield. Despite the club sitting just two points above the relegation zone, Fernandes has earned widespread praise for his technical ability and work rate, currently holding an average rating of 6.84.
Transfer Speculation and Heavyweight Interest
Fernandes’ rapid ascent has made him a primary target for Europe’s elite. Reports from 4 May 2026 confirm that Manchester United have identified him as a priority for their summer rebuild following their return to the Champions League. Manchester City and Liverpool are also reportedly monitoring the player, with City’s sporting director Hugo Viana—who knows the player from Sporting CP—tracking his progress closely. While West Ham are determined to keep him regardless of their league status, a valuation of approximately £55–65 million has been discussed.
International Standing
Fernandes made his senior international debut for Portugal in a friendly against the United States in April 2026. Given his domestic form, he is widely expected to be named in Roberto Martínez’s squad for the 2026 World Cup this June.
