A last-gasp win on home soil has given Los Angeles FC the keys to what could be its third CONCACAF Champions Cup final appearance in the space of six years. The West Coast club needs only a draw away to Toluca in Wednesday’s semi-final second leg to advance, as it looks to finally get a piece of continental silverware.
Premier League icon Son Heung-min assisted each of LAFC’s goals in the first leg at BMO Stadium, including Nkosi Tafari’s 91st-minute decider to swing the result in their favor. Jesus Ricardo Angulo equalized to give Toluca hope of returning to the Estadio Nemesio Diez on level terms, but the Black and Gold currently hold the edge.
LAFC has never won the CONCACAF Champions Cup despite contesting two finals since 2020 and losing to Liga MX opposition in each of those encounters. Toluca, meanwhile, has clinched what was previously the CONCACAF Champions League on two occasions, though it’s been more than a decade since its last appearance in the final.
Son could be a major difference-maker in that regard and now leads the Champions Cup on assists, having collected seven in as many matches this year. Toluca, meanwhile, still boasts the competition’s joint-top goalscorer if Portugal’s Paulinho (six goals) can rediscover his groove, having failed to score in his last three outings.
