Anthony Gordon’s situation at Newcastle United is becoming increasingly clear following comments from Eddie Howe after the draw against Nott Forest on Sunday.

The winger has now been left on the bench in consecutive matches despite being fit, raising questions about his role heading into the summer.

Howe tried to hide the truth under “tactical” decisions,…

“It was tactical,” Howe told BBC Radio Newcastle. “The team has performed well in Anthony’s absence. Obviously, we have gone with a bit more solidity with Joelinton playing wide and one winger the other side just to try and strengthen us defensively, because we weren’t happy with how we were defending. Since January, really, we have been disappointed – so a change of structure really.”

…until the gaffer could do no more.

“Ant has come back to fitness. He’s training well,” Howe said, “but, also, I’m looking at the future as well.”

That admission comes amid confirmed transfer movement involving the player, with Bayern Munich already working on a transfer for the England international.

“Bayern Munich have opened talks with Newcastle over a potential summer move for Anthony Gordon,” Keith Downie reported for Sky Sports. “Newcastle will listen to offers for the England winger this summer as they expect him to want to explore his options.”

Howe’s selection decisions suggest planning is already underway.

“We have got one eye on the future,” Howe said. “It’s our duty to try and look to the future and see what the new team is going to look like next year.”

And with that, Gordon might have already played his last game in black and white stripes.
