Minnesota Timberwolves fans are getting excited again after a nine-year-old tweet resurfaced regarding Dallas Mavericks star guard Kyrie Irving.

Timberwolves fans on social media appear to be rejoicing regarding Irving having Minnesota as a preferred destination back in 2017.

The 34-year-old was ultimately traded to the Boston Celtics that offseason. Since then, Irving has gone to the Brooklyn Nets and the Dallas Mavericks.

The nine-time All-Star has spent the two-plus seasons in Dallas, and there is an expectation that he could be dealt in a trade this offseason.

NBA teams expected to show interest in Kyrie Irving

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, there is league wide expecation that teams may explore trade scenarios this summer.

“Kidd had a strong relationship with both and Ujiri said at his May 5 news conference that he is as eager as Mavericks fans to finally see Irving play alongside Flagg after the nine-time NBA All-Star guard missed the entire 2025-26 season in the wake of knee surgery in March 2025,” Stein wrote.

“Yet there is an anticipation leaguewide that the Mavericks are likely to receive trade interest in Irving this offseason whether they want it or not … even after the 34-year-old's full season of inactivity.”

There's a good chance that the Mavericks continue to shake things up, especially after firing head coach Jason Kidd on Tuesday. Could those changes also involve Irving? Only time will tell.

Nonetheless, the Timberwolves could be a team that could make a strong push for the former champion. While that could be the case, the Timberwolves' flexibility is limited.

A most realistic centerpiece is sending out Julius Randle for Irving. However, it's unlikely Dallas would want a one-for-one deal, and if a trade like this is likely, Minnesota would need to attach draft capital, younger rotational players or any other additional assets.

If the Timberwolves are set to pursue Irving, they could possibly have some steep competition.
