Former New England Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett is currently neck deep in the most bizarre contract holdout I have ever seen.

Josh Weinfuss, the ESPN beat reporter for the Arizona Cardinals, detailed Brissett's contract negotiations. He wrote that Brissett has already been told by new head coach Matt LeFleur that he is the team's starting quarterback in 2026.

Having this information, Brissett seems to have taken offense to the fact that his "backup", the newly signed Gardner Minshew, is set to make more than $3.5 million more in guaranteed money than he.

This gripe makes sense at face value. But if you dig any deeper, you'll be forced to face the fact that Brissett has never been better than a below-average quarterback in the NFL.

He went 1-11 as the starter for the Cardinals last season. This made his career record as a starter 20-45.

Moreover, he has absolutely no ties to the new head coach. LeFleur signed Minshew and drafted Carson Beck. This makes a holdout coming from the last regime's backup quarterback all the more unusual.

Brissett is scheduled to make $4.88 million next year, which is about $3 million more than I'd be willing to pay him. If I were him, I'd be crossing all my T's and dotting all my I's, hoping the general manager doesn't want to get $5 million off his books for the fun of it.

The Cardinals are supposed to be one of -- if not the very worst -- teams in the league. They can tank for the 2027 NFL Draft with or without Brissett.

LeFleur seems to feel this way, too, as he told Weinfuss the discussions with his quarterback are "the same as where we were a few weeks ago."

I don't see this holdout going anywhere for the 33-year-old veteran quarterback.
