Texans RB Woody Marks provides update on role with offense for 2026

Houston Texans running back Woody Marks might have been a potent RB1 last season, but he was always better suited as a No. 2 option in the ground game.

That seems to be the plan for the second-year running back moving into 2026.

Marks, a former fourth-round pick out of USC, took over midseason for Nick Chubb as the focal back for the Texans' offense. While he often left the field and needed to be examined, the rookie still managed to finish with a team-leading 703 rushing yards and five total touchdowns as Houston secured a 12-win season behind third-year coach DeMeco Ryans.

This offseason, the Texans traded for Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery to take over as the top runner in place of Pro Bowler Joe Mixon. In the Motor City, Montgomery saw his fair share of snaps, but he was always suited as the No. 2 behind All-Pro Jahmyr Gibbs.

That former role of Montgomery, barring a breakout training camp session, will likely become the new role of Marks. And the latter has already been in contact non-stop with the former.

“Love him as a back, watched him a couple times, him and Jahmyr Gibbs, see how they complement each other,” Marks told KPRC 2 Sports' Aaron Wilson on Montgomery.

“We reached out to each other already, just time to get to work. Having another back in the backfield is always good. There’s less I can take off of my body and there’s less he can take off his body, and we’re just ready to get to work.”

Best known for his receiving skills, expect Marks to be a factor in the passing game over "Knuckles," at least on third down. Last season, Marks finished with more receiving touchdowns than rushing scores and totaled over 200 yards with 30 receptions.

That will be the primary way Marks sees action in second-year offensive coordinator Nick Caley's offense. The two have been in constant communication since offseason workouts began, with Caley providing context on how he best sees the former Trojan being utlitzed to his full potential.

“Nick Caley is doing a great job right now," Marks said. “Got me doing all types of routes, learning the route tree. Just get outside and just using me as he can so I can be productive.”

The Texans return to practice next week for the start of voluntary OTAs.
