Ajax will face Utrecht on Sunday in a bid to secure the final European ticket available to Eredivisie sides. Ajax, who are having to play their games in Volendam while their stadium is unavailable, beat FC Groningen 2-0 on Thursday evening to secure a spot in the final. There they will face Utrecht, who overcame Heerenveen just a few hours after Ajax’s victory.
Ajax and Utrecht have already seen each other twice this season, and it hasn’t been good news for the side from Amsterdam so far. Back in November Ajax travelled to Utrecht and lost 2-1 thanks to goals from Matisse Didden and Sebastien Haller. In the reverse fixture, the score line was the same, with Ajax falling to a 96th minute winner from Mike van der Hoorn.
Ajax have not actually beaten Utrecht since March 2024 at home. Last season they drew 2-2 at home with Utrecht and then lost 4-0 away from home. Missing out on European football for the first time since 1991 would be a huge blow for Ajax and could really impact how they approach this summer.
