The New York Mets designated Boston Red Sox World Series champion Craig Kimbrel for assignment on Friday to call up Jonah Tong, the team announced.
Kimbrel signed a minor league deal with the Mets in January. He was called up on April 11 and appeared in 14 games with the Mets. He had a 6.00 ERA. The Mets could trade him before placing him on waivers. He figures to clear waivers, once again becoming a free agent, if the Mets do not line up a trade.
Kimbrel has been one of the best relief pitchers of this generation for most of his career, but he is no longer the player he once was.
