The 2026 season for the Boston Red Sox has been a complete disaster so far. While they might not be out of the playoff hunt just yet, it's trending in that direction.
The Red Sox are 22-29, and while they're just 2.5 games out of the third and final Wild Card spot, the roster isn't nearly good enough to contend this year, even if they get fully healthy.
For USA Today's Bob Nightengale, he is urging the Red Sox to sell at this year's trade deadline. He gave the Red Sox an "F" grade for their 2026 season and called upon Craig Breslow and company to reset the roster amid this year's disaster.
Red Sox urged to be sellers at trade deadline
"The Red Sox should sell at the deadline, offering outfielder Jarren Duran and closer Aroldis Chapman, and start over this winter," Nightengale writes.
Even though the Red Sox could still make the playoffs this year, and it wouldn't be too big of a surprise, it might be time to reset the roster a bit.
If they do, the Red Sox will have a few interesting trade chips that could bring back some solid returns at the deadline.
Chapman is the obvious headliner, as a closer as good as Chapman doesn't become available very often, and there are plenty of teams which would have interest, including the San Diego Padres according to Nightengale.

But Jarren Duran could also be on the move, along with Isaiah Kiner-Falefa, Sonny Gray, and any other player in the final year of their deals.
Breslow made a big mistake with the Caleb Durbin trade, and while they might try to double down and act as buyers, this might be the best time to sell off their assets to recoup value and look towards the future as their years of contention.
Nightengale is urging the Red Sox to act as sellers at this year's trade deadline, and it would make a lot of sense if Boston did sell. The only question will be if Breslow and company are willing to admit the 2026 season was a failure and retool for 2027.
