Ex-MLB star Wander Franco avoids prison after being found guilty of sexual abuse of minor
· Yahoo Sports
Former MLB and Tampa Bay Rays star Wander Franco’s legal case reached another major turning point Monday. A Dominican court found him criminally responsible for sexual and psychological abuse of a minor but ruled that he would avoid prison time. The decision closes another chapter in a case that has dramatically altered the trajectory of one of baseball’s once-brightest young stars.
Franco was once viewed as one of the faces of Major League Baseball’s future. Instead, allegations that surfaced in 2023 completely shifted both his career and public image.

Judge José Antonio Núñez ruled Monday that Franco was guilty of sexual and psychological abuse involving a minor. However, the court also determined that Franco had been the victim of extortion and blackmail carried out by the minor’s mother.
Because of that ruling, Franco received judicial pardon protections related to sentencing. He will not serve prison time despite being found guilty. The conviction itself remains in place. The distinction is important. While Franco avoided incarceration, the court did not overturn or erase the finding of guilt. He remains legally responsible in the case, even though he was spared punishment under the court’s ruling.
The Case Dates Back To Early 2024
Franco was arrested in January 2024 after authorities accused him of maintaining a four-month relationship with a girl who was 14 years old at the time. Prosecutors alleged that thousands of dollars were transferred to the girl’s mother in exchange for consent regarding the relationship.
Franco, now 24, had previously been convicted and handed a suspended sentence before appeals from both sides resulted in another trial being ordered. Monday’s ruling represented the latest legal development in the ongoing case.
The girl’s mother was also convicted and sentenced in connection with the case after the court found she had played a role in exploiting her daughter.

Back in November 2021, Franco signed an 11-year, $182 million extension with the Tampa Bay Rays, cementing him as the centerpiece of the franchise’s future. At the time, he was considered one of the sport’s most exciting young players. His rise appeared to be happening quickly.
Franco earned All-Star recognition and helped establish Tampa Bay as a serious contender. Many around baseball believed he was developing into one of the game’s next superstar talents.
Then the allegations emerged. Authorities in the Dominican Republic announced in August 2023 that Franco was under investigation, leading MLB to place him on administrative leave before later moving him to the restricted list. He has not played in the majors since.
Major League Return Appears Increasingly Unlikely
Even though Franco avoided prison time, the guilty verdict itself may create long-term obstacles for any potential return to baseball. The conviction remains on his record. Major League Baseball still has authority to impose discipline under its Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse Policy. Franco also remains on the restricted list.
Wander Franco looked like a player destined to become one of baseball’s biggest stars for years to come. Now, regardless of Monday’s sentencing outcome, the chances of him making a successful return to Major League Baseball appear slimmer than ever.
