HPU FALLS IN BIG SOUTH TOURNEY
BOILING SPRINGS – Top-seeded High Point University suffered a pair of losses late Saturday night that eliminated it from the Big South Conference baseball tournament and ended its season.
The Panthers lost 4-0 against third-seeded USC Upstate and 7-4 against sixth-seeded Longwood in a pair of late-night games that stretched into Sunday morning after weather altered the schedule and moved games to Gardner-Webb.
Longwood pushed Upstate to the brink on Sunday, winning 4-1 in the opener, but the Spartans won the winner-take-all finale 8-1 for the conference's one lone berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Landen Johnson had a pair of hits for High Point against Upstate. Aiden Paul struck out four in six innings. Justin Ruiz had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs against Longwood. Wade Walton struck out eight in seven innings.
The Panthers finished the season with a 37-20 overall record, going 17-7 in the conference and winning their first regular-season crown.
CCFC FALLS AT CHATTANOOGA
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Carolina Core FC lost 1-0 against Chattanooga FC in MLS NEXT Pro soccer Sunday at Chattanooga.
Chattanooga scored the lone goal of the match in the 59th minute.
Nick Holliday made four saves in goal for the Foxes (1-6-4, eight points), who will host Red Bull New York II on Saturday at 6 p.m.
