Team Canada’s run at a gold medal at the IIHF World Hockey Championship ends here, falling 4-2 to Finland in a semifinal upset at Swiss Life Arena.

Canada came in looking like a juggernaut after that dominant shutout over the United States in the quarterfinal. It just never really looked the same, though. Finland flipped it early, and from there it felt like Canada was chasing the game more than anything.

They pushed late, pulled the goalie, and tried to get something going in the final minutes. But Finland just shut it down. Neutral zone clogged up, lanes gone, nothing clean coming through. Despite all that Canada threw to the net, Finland locked it down and punched their ticket to the Finals against Switzerland.

Losing Evan Bouchard in the quarterfinal obviously loomed over this one too. The puck movement wasn’t quite as sharp, and the blue line looked a step slower moving it out.

Canada’s still alive in the tournament, but it’s a quick reset now. They’ll turn around and play Norway on Sunday for the bronze medal.
