Newman announced his commitment in a public post on X, choosing Duke over offers from Tennessee, Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State. The Sevier County standout had been scheduled to visit Durham on Friday before announcing his commitment.

In 15 games with Sevier County, Newman caught 78 passes for 1,059 yards and 10 touchdowns, helping to lead the team to the TSSAA Class 5A state championship game. He was also a linebacker with the Smoky Bears, and finished the season with 117 total tackles, eight pass breakups, four interceptions, three sacks and two fumble recoveries.

A 6-foot-3.5 and 215-pound tight end, Newman is rated as the No. 15 tight end in the 2027 class by 247Sports and the No. 20 tight end in the Composite rankings. He also ranks among Tennessee's top prospects in the position group.

Manny Diaz's Blue Devils now have eight hard commits in their 2027 recruiting class, with Newman becoming the highest-rated commitment in the group, according to 247Sports. Duke currently ranks 40th nationally, though plenty of prospects remain uncommitted.
