Sue Bird Reacts to Caitlin Clark’s Viral Incident With Coach Stephanie White
· Yahoo Sports
The Indiana Fever fell 100-84 to the Portland Fire on Saturday evening, dropping to 4-4 on the season.
It was one of the toughest games of Caitlin Clark’s young career, as she finished with just six points in 21 minutes while shooting 1 of 7 from the field. Clark battled foul trouble throughout the contest and ultimately finished with five fouls.

One of the most scrutinized topics surrounding the Fever this season has been head coach Stephanie White’s minute distribution, particularly when it comes to Clark. On Saturday, Clark opened the game by either scoring or assisting on Indiana’s early 8-2 run.
However, after White substituted Clark, Aliyah Boston, and Lexie Hull around the six-minute mark of the first quarter, Portland responded with a 13-2 run of its own. The Fire carried a double-digit lead into the second quarter and never relinquished control.
Still, the most talked-about moment from the game came when Clark, known for her fiery competitiveness, was involved in a heated exchange with White during a timeout. Shortly afterward, White elected to take Clark out of the game and replace her with rookie Raven Johnson.

The incident sparked reactions from across the basketball world, including Sue Bird, who weighed in during NBC’s WNBA coverage. Having been involved in plenty of emotionally charged games throughout her career, Bird viewed the exchange as nothing out of the ordinary.
“I think it’s frustration,” Bird said. “It’s also not that crazy. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this. It doesn’t have some deep meaning to it. I’ve had moments like that with coaches. I think it speaks to player-coach relationships.”

“Right now, it’s frustration. And unfortunately, it’s boiling over, and it’s being seen,” Miller said. “It’s one thing to have it behind closed doors, but when it spills over, and when the coach has to basically say, ‘You know what Caitlin, enough is enough, this is too disruptive. In and out, take a seat.’”
