Junior starting pitcher Elena Ritchey powered the Mountaineers with a complete-game shutout performance that included 12 strikeouts and two hits allowed.

"She's fantastic. Especially after last year battling the injury and then coming back, a lot of uncertainty there," Berlin Brothersvalley coach Brian Slope said. "She's just gotten better and better every outing, and I don't think we've seen her best yet."

This year's playoff game was a similar result to 2025's first-round battle when Berlin Brothersvalley won 3-0 over Carmichaels.

Sam Walker started for the Mountaineers that day and allowed two hits with six strikeouts, while Carmichaels' Bailey Barnyak struck out 11. Barnyak, who will play at Indiana (Pa.), had an equally impressive effort Monday with seven punchouts.

"That was a heck of a pitchers' duel right there." Slope said. "Luckily, we came out on top."

Berlin Brothersvalley will play District 10 champ Cambridge Springs, an 8-1 winner over Jefferson-Morgan, Thursday in the quarterfinals. Cambridge Springs beat Berlin Brothersvalley 4-2 in the 2025 quarterfinals.

Berlin Brothersvalley's first run came in the second inning. PennWest Edinboro signee Elsie Barna drove a line drive to right field, then stole second base early in the next at-bat. Callie Ritchey dropped one into the left-center field gap to put runners on the corners.

Bena Barna then laid down a bunt that scored the runner at third and put Mountaineers on the corners again, but Carmichaels was able to limit the scoring with two strikeouts and a groundout to close the frame.

"Bailey pitched her butt off," Carmichaels coach David Briggs said. "We played pretty good defense behind her. (Berlin Brothersvalley) has a pretty strong hitting team, so it's just tough when it comes to them."

Each team recorded just one hit over the next three frames, and nine total batters were sat down via strikeouts.

As a result, Berlin Brothersvalley's game-sealing run wasn't until the sixth inning when Elena Ritchey stood in scoring position after a base hit to left field and a sacrifice bunt from Elsie Barna.

Callie Ritchey was credited with the RBI on a base hit to center that brought home Elena Ritchey for the 2-0 lead.

Berlin Brothersvalley finished the win with six hits and left four runners on base.

"We had base runners on almost every inning, so I'm happy with that," Slope said. "We could have been a little more patient at times, take a few more pitches, but we've been aggressive all year and it's worked out pretty well.

"(Barnyak) is a very good pitcher. I would say that's more of a credit to her than anything from our side. I like our lineup from top to bottom, and she did a very good job."

Carmichaels recorded its second hit of the contest in the seventh, but Elena Ritchey's 11th and 12th strikeouts, and a groundout sealed the second PIAA playoff win in Berlin Brothersvalley softball history.

"It's been a fun run with these girls," Briggs said. "I'm proud of our team this year. We had a lot of new people in some new places. A lot of people didn't think we would do what we did."

This is the fourth consecutive year that Berlin Brothersvalley has made the PIAA playoffs, and the second time advancing to the quarterfinals.

After 2025's 4-2 loss to Cambridge Springs, the 23-2 Mountaineers will look to make a push for the state title this season.

"These girls are playing for each other," Slope said. "There's no ego on this team. There is no me on this team. It's all for each other. I can't ask for more than that."
