For four seasons, Brown served as Hurts' most reliable target, biggest playmaker, and one of the primary reasons Philadelphia developed into one of the NFL's most explosive offenses. Now, with Brown headed to the New England Patriots, Hurts enters a new phase of his career. The timing is significant.
When the Eagles acquired Brown during the 2022 NFL Draft, Hurts was still attempting to establish himself as a franchise quarterback. Brown's arrival helped accelerate that process. His ability to win contested catches, create explosive plays, and draw extra defensive attention gave Hurts a margin for error few quarterbacks enjoy.
The results spoke for themselves.
Philadelphia reached two Super Bowls during Brown's tenure, while Hurts emerged as one of the NFL's elite quarterbacks. The connection between the two became one of the league's most productive quarterback-receiver partnerships. Now the Eagles must prove they can maintain that level of offensive success without Brown.
That doesn't mean Hurts is without weapons. DeVonta Smith remains one of the NFL's most polished route runners, while Dallas Goedert continues to provide a dependable presence at tight end. Philadelphia has also invested heavily in replenishing the receiving corps with younger talent and additional depth like Makai Lemon (first round pick), Hollywood Brown (Free Agency), and Tay Wicks (trade).
The challenge for Hurts will be different, however. Instead of relying on a dominant No. 1 receiver capable of taking over games, the Eagles may be forced to spread the football around more consistently while feeding DeVonta Smith in critical situations. New offensive coordinator Sean Mannion recently emphasized that philosophy, noting that success comes from how all the pieces fit together rather than any one player.
The trade also places more responsibility on Hurts' shoulders as a leader and playmaker. Great quarterbacks elevate the talent around them, and the Eagles are betting that Hurts has reached that stage of his career.
Brown helped Hurts become a superstar.
Now, Hurts must show he can thrive without him. That may be the defining storyline of Philadelphia's 2026 season.
