The Raiders felt confident in taking the risk because the reward could be so big. McCoy was once considered the best CB in this class, and a top-ten player, yet Vegas got him in the fourth round. His being at the rookie minicamp, dressed out in uniform, was already a great sign. Then he showed up at OTAs to do some limited work. The Raiders are already loving what they're seeing from a potential CB1.

On Jermod McCoy
During team periods at OTAs, he worked on the side with trainers. Even so, his active presence at practice is already a great return on investment. When you factor in everything that's known about his situation so far, this is huge. To keep him engaged, the Raiders have had him field punts. Not sure why, but perhaps just to give him some reps of some sort.
If McCoy weren't at practice-if he were only inside with trainers-fans and media might react very differently. While his practice participation was significant during rookie minicamp, it's clear there's still room for improvement. Being off to the side means he isn't fully cleared yet, or he'd be taking part in all team activities.
