On Friday, Prime Minister Mark Carney shared a video of himself, his wife Diana Fox Carney, and other local Members of Parliament at a discount grocery store in Brampton to promote the launch of the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit.

Or as the Toronto Sun ’s Brian Lilley put it, “ celebrate his government’s total failure on affordability .”

The one-time GST/HST top-up is intended to provide relief to more than 12 million Canadians and help families save up to $1,890 this year on everyday essentials.

But the rebate isn’t helping everyone. Individuals with no children must have an income of $56,181 or less, while couples making $66,841 or less with two children qualify.

Those making more, either significantly or just eking by, who make up the majority of the population, won’t receive this payment — meaning average Canadians and Canadian families will continue to face exorbitant food prices.

Mixed reviews from Canadians

That said, Carney’s supporters are calling the rebate for low-income Canadians a win. Many on social media disagree but some people applauding the prime minister.

One user on LinkedIn noted: “Good to see leaders paying attention to everyday costs that families face,” while another praised his efforts to engage in “constant dialogue with the people.”

They added: “Everything you do is wonderful. I hope this serves as an example for many people.”

A third chimed in: “In uncertain economic periods, even small financial relief can make a meaningful difference for households.”

However, most people, particularly those who won’t see any relief, weighed in on the top-up they will have no part of.

“Egg noodles were 5.79 today at Sobeys. Pickled red onions were 10.99. I could go on but thanks for the fake benefit I don’t qualify for,” one person on X wrote.

Another asked, “Does it reduce the cost of food?” before pointing out that “this is the same as HST/GST.”

They added: “You pat yourself on the back for taking money from hard-working taxpayers to give to a selected few as oppose to tackling the food cost which would help all Canadians. We the middle-class are struggling to put food on the table.”

One X user scoffed: “Only Liberals would brag that millions of Canadians can’t afford to buy groceries,” one user on X wrote.

Another wrote: “Every Liberal answer is just a list of programs. Pharmacare. Dental. Daycare. Grocery rebate. None of it fixes the underlying problem — they made everything unaffordable in the first place.”

A third called out Carney for his fake grocery store trip.

“I GUARANTEE this is the first time this f***er has ever stepped foot in a FreshCo.”
