NFL analyst disrespects Dolphins' Quinn Ewers in backup QB rankings
· Yahoo Sports
Last offseason, the Miami Dolphins took former Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL draft to develop behind quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, but after the starter's mediocre showing, the rookie was thrust into the starting role.
Ewers finished the year with 622 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions while completing 66.3% of his passes in his four appearances. In his three starts, he led the team to a 1-2 record.

Now, heading into 2026, the 23-year-old has landed back on the bench with the arrival of Malik Willis, and despite getting some starting experience last year, many analysts are still out on Ewers as an NFL quarterback.
In fact Sports Illustrated's Gilberto Manzano recently ranked Ewers 31st among backup quarterbacks in the NFL in 2026.
"With Tua Tagovailoa struggling again amid a losing season in 2025, the Dolphins made sure to give their rookie quarterback an early audition for 2026," Manzano wrote. "It seems Ewers didn’t do much in his three starts to impress the organization because the team went out and signed Malik Willis to be the new starter. However, it didn’t help Ewers’s case that the team added a new GM (Jon-Eric Sullivan) and coach (Jeff Hafley) this offseason."
The only backup that Manzano ranked below Ewers was New York Jets quarterback Cade Klubnik, who the team took in the fourth round of this year's draft. Ewers even ranked below rookie quarterback Ty Simpson, who the Los Angeles Rams surprisingly took in the first round.
