Panthers WR Xavier Legette gets huge vote of confidence from HC Dave Canales

According to Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales, wideout Xavier Legette isn't the only person in their locker room facing an important 2026.

Canales chatted with reporters on Tuesday afternoon, upon wrapping up the team's first outing of mandatory minicamp. He praised the offseason work of Legette, and was asked if this upcoming season is a make-or-break one for the struggling pass catcher.

"I think it's a make-or-break year for all of us, every year. And Xavier has worked that way," Canales replied. "From the minute he's gotten here, he's 100 miles an hour. He's putting in the time in the playbook, he's busting his butt on the field, working on little technical skills.

"We had great meetings going out of the season, great meetings when he came back in April. Talked about his plan and the things he's working on and all that. He's just aware of all the things he needs to continue to improve upon to be the player that we know he can be, and that he knows he can be."

To this point, Legette has not been the first-round talent the organization drafted in 2024. He's had trouble getting past fundamental issues with drops and spacial awareness, and has amassed just 84 receptions for 860 yards and seven touchdowns in his first two seasons.

Legette saw his playing time dip over the final stretch of the 2025 campaign, where he ended up recording a career-low 31.4-percent snap share in the finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

To become more involved, that work Canales referenced will have to show up on the field—particularly when it matters. Between reigning Offensive Rookie of Year Tetairoa McMillan already establishing himself as the No. 1 target, the emergence of former undrafted free agent Jalen Coker and this year's selection of third-rounder Chris Brazzell II, there may not be much time (or space) left for Legette.
