German national team head coach Julian Nagelsmann went to bat for Leroy Sané against criticism that the player was facing after the team’s 7-1 win over Curaçao.

“With Leroy, the first basis for assessment is how much he invests in the game. He invested a lot; he was diligent in all transition situations. He was very involved, both offensively and defensively. I don’t know the stats yet, but I think he covered an enormous amount of ground. And made some good runs in behind. He was a bit unlucky with that one chance, but it wasn’t that easy either,” Nagelsmann said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).

Sané, who has been in the crosshairs of some German national team fans and pundits, did had a tough game, but absolutely has the support of his head coach. Aside of the second half miss, Sané lost possession on 16 of his 71 touches and took three shots overall, but none were on target. However, Sané did complete 80% of his passes (40/50) and had two key passes. As for distance, Sané covered 9.8 kilometers (6 miles).
