Two Dortmund players on the scoresheet: Germany celebrate a resounding victory in their World Cup opener

As in the previous warm-up matches against Finland and the USA ahead of the World Cup, Schlotterbeck and Nmecha were in the German national team’s starting line-up. This faith in them paid off early on against underdogs Curaçao as Felix Nmecha played a simple one-two with Florian Wirtz before curling the ball into the net to give Germany the lead after just six minutes.
After the World Cup debutants from the Caribbean had temporarily equalised through Livano Comenencia (21st minute), a Borussia player was also responsible for Germany’s second goal of the day as centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck scored with a header following a corner from Frankfurt’s Nathaniel Brown (38). It was the 26-year-old’s first international goal. Arsenal’s Kai Havertz scored Germany’s third goal from the penalty spot in first-half stoppage time, which the ever-present Felix Nmecha had won in the build-up.

In the second half, the German team added further goals through Jamal Musiala (47), Nathaniel Brown (68), Deniz Undav (78) and Havertz again (88) in a one-sided match. Borussia’s Nmecha was substituted in the 72nd minute and replaced by Leon Goretzka. Waldemar Anton made his World Cup debut in the 83rd minute, coming on for captain Joshua Kimmich.
Germany face Ivory Coast in their second group match this coming Saturday (20 June, 22:00 CEST) in Toronto.
In World Cup Group F, Sweden also made a strong statement in their opening match. The Scandinavians defeated Tunisia 5-1 (2-1) on Monday morning. BVB defender Daniel Svensson only came on as a substitute in the closing stages of the match in Monterrey, Mexico. Svensson and Sweden face the Netherlands in their next match on Saturday (19:00 CEST).
