Clark won the US Open by a single stroke ahead of second-placed Sam Burns.

He will obviously be absolutely delighted with his victory, but playing on Sunday at Shinnecock Hills couldn’t have been much fun for him.

Wyndham Clark has behaved really poorly on numerous occasions in the past and, as a result, the fans at Shinnecock Hills were certainly not on his side.

The incident at Oakmont this time last year and the time when he threw his club into an advertising board during the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow really rubbed golf fans up the wrong way.

However, the 32-year-old proved that he has what it takes to triumph through adversity as he won his second US Open trophy in his last four attempts.

Clark was targeted by numerous fans at the US Open, and every poor shot he hit was cheered by the vast majority of the crowds.

After his fine win at Shinnecock on Sunday, Clark was asked about the treatment he received from the fans during the final round.

And the now two-time US Open champion responded by making a statement aimed at those fans who jeered him.

New York did not really like me, he said.

I love you guys. But I get it. Some of it is self deserved, I did some unfortunate things last year that I regret.

I have said sorry multiple times and I’m still sorry.

Hopefully I can win you guys over eventually. But I get it, they were rooting for Scottie. The Grand Slam has only happened a few times. He is going to get it. He’s the best player in the world but today is my day.

Wyndham Clark may never manage to win over the fans, but that won’t really matter to him. All he cares about is winning the very biggest events and he has proven over the past few years that he has what it takes to do exactly that.

During the trophy ceremony, Clark responded when asked how he was able to remain at the top of the leaderboard, in spite of finding some really tricky spots on the golf course throughout the week.

I played some ugly golf the last two days but my putter and short game kept me in it.

To make all the putts I did with my PING putter, which I love so much, has been amazing. It comes down to just believing good things are going to happen and you are going to make the putt and thankfully for the most part I did.

It’s been a grind the last two or three days, I have not played the prettiest golf. I have been in some pretty sketchy spots.

The ball out of the fescue has been jumping a lot and I knew I could cover that (on 16). To make birdie there was a bonus. I just wanted to make par.
