‘Michael’ moonwalks past ‘Oppenheimer’ to become the highest-grossing biopic of all time

The movie Michael, a film about the life of the late music superstar, Michael Jackson, has become the highest grossing biopic.

Jackson is played by his 29-year-old nephew, Jaafar Jackson, who is Jermain Jackson’s son. He  was just 13 years old when his uncle, Michael Jackson, died on 25 June 2009.

The film was directed by Antoine Fuqua and starred Nia Long, Juliano Krue Valdi (as young Michael), Miles Teller, Colman Domingo and Mike Myers.

It tracks the King of Pop’s history and ascent to stardom, along with his brothers, under the guidance of his father and care of his mother.

Michael has earned $977.4 million (R16 056 746 748) at the box office, reportedly dethroning Oppenheimer, according to Variety. Oppenheimer earned $975 million (R16 017 319 500) globally.

Michael came out in April, grossing $607.2 million (R9 975 093 744) globally and $370.2 million (R6 081 653 004) in the US. It opened to $97 million (R1 593 517 940) in the US and $217 million (R2 086 358 540) globally.
