The Boston Red Sox just finished off an amazing new rendition of The Rivalry, sweeping their greatest enemy, the New York Yankees, in four games. Beating the best team in the American League four times in a row is sure to help their mental status, and set them up for a run to the All-Star Break.
In fact, Boston’s opposition up to the break is actually weak enough for them to go on a serious run. If they can, being buyers at the deadline might need some serious consideration. On the other hand, if they crash and burn, it’s the final nail in the coffin for a decision on selling.
The upcoming gauntlet

Starting tonight, the Red Sox will continue their homestand with a three game series against the Washington Nationals, who are 43-42 and fourth in the NL East. Then, they start a nine game away trip, facing off against the 36-49 AL West last placeLos Angeles Angels, the 43-39 AL Central-leadingChicago White Sox, and finish with the 35-49 NL East last placeNew York Mets.
The series against Washington, Los Angeles, and New York are all definitely winnable, and a sweep is possible. The only one that could give Boston grief is Chicago, as they are finally starting to kick it into overdrive.
Deja Vu from last season
Last year, in the ten games before the All-Star Break, the Red Sox went on a massive run, winning all ten and riding a high into the break. This win streak helped them from being written out of the playoffs, to being in the Wild Card series for the first time since 2021.
Boston now has the ability to do this once again, and even shatter that win streak by winning the next 12. While improbable, it’s not impossible. If they were to do so, it would put them two games over .500, and firmly back into the Wild Card race.
Once again, this is quite improbable, but Boston has conquered the odds before, what’s to stop them from doing it again?

This final dash to the break will definitely affect how Boston approaches the trade deadline in August. If they can somehow win a majority of these games and put themselves in the Wild Card or just near it, they should be buyers at the deadline.
However, if they go .500 worse, selling should be their top priority. In any case, tonight will be the first glimpse of what’s to come; hopefully, the Sox go on a run, and vie for contention once more.
