Center back José Canale delivered the winning penalty for Paraguay after goalkeeper Orlando Gill stopped two shots for his side.

In the 102nd minute, Germany appeared to take a 2-1 lead on a header by Jonathan Tan. After VAR however, it was ruled that Paraguay’s goalkeeper Orlando Gill was fouled and the goal was disallowed.

In the Round of 16 Paraguay will play the winner of France and Sweden.

Enciso delivers first-half stunner

Julio Enciso will never forget his first World Cup goal. The 22-year-old began the tournament by helping Paraguay with his passing, notching an assist in each of the first two matches.

Against Germany, the striker took the game within his own hands in the 42nd minute.

After Paraguay disrupted a German counter, Matías Galarza worked the ball into the right side of the box. From there, he crossed where Enciso was waiting to head it home and give Paraguay a 1-0 lead just before halftime.

Paraguay happily sits back

Six days after Ghana executed a perfect low block against England at Gillette, Paraguay did the exact same thing against Germany.

In the first half, Germany held 79 percent possession and completed 253 more passes than Paraguay, though it mustered just five total shots and none on target.

The tactic kept up for the remainder of the match with Germany holding 75 percent possession and 550 more completed passes than Paraguay.

Havertz equalizes

After a few scary counters for Paraguay to start the second half, Germany responded in the 54th minute. Florian Wirtz floated a ball into the box from the left side and Kai Havertz guided it home with his head to tie the contest, 1-1.

Cards:

The first yellow card of the match was not until the 64th minute, when Andres Cubas took down Havertz just outside the 18-yard box. In the 107th minute, Havertz picked up his own yellow.

Germany’s Jamal Musiala was given a yellow card in the 115th minute. That was almost immediately followed by a yellow card for Galarza.
