Real Madrid has released an official statement on its website to clear up rumors surrounding its pursuit of Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

Reports on this topic have circulated for weeks, but comments made by the Argentine’s agent Javier Pastore to MARCA on Thursday have led to increased speculation that Fernandez could switch the English capital for its Spanish counterpart this summer.

Madrid launched a communicado at around 11AM on Friday “in view of the information and statements that have appeared in recent days about the alleged interest of Real Madrid C. F. in the player Enzo Fernandez”.

“The club wishes to state that it has not carried out any management, either direct or indirect, aimed at the signing of the aforementioned player and, likewise, has no intention of undertaking such an operation,” the La Liga giant continued.

“Real Madrid would like to express its utmost respect for Enzo Fernandez, a great footballer whose career and quality are well known, as well as for Chelsea FC, a club with which he has an excellent institutional relationship.

“Precisely because of the respect that an entity like Chelsea FC deserves and because of the principles of institutional loyalty that have always presided over Real Madrid's performance, the club considers it necessary to categorically deny speculations that are unfounded and do not respond to reality.

“Real Madrid regrets that, despite the clarity of the facts and the absence of any action on the part of the club, information continues to be disseminated that does not correspond to reality and that only contributes to generating confusion among fans and unnecessarily harming the entities and people involved,” it then concluded.

Does this end Real Madrid’s pursuit of Enzo Fernandez?

With Real Madrid and Chelsea having already done business this summer for Marc Cucurella, who is Jose Mourinho’s new left back, there still might be scope for a deal involving Fernandez.

The midfielder is said to be unhappy at Stamford Bridge, with Pastore stating that “we are looking at possibilities to leave Chelsea”.

Pastore also admitted that “there is nothing firm or confirmed at any club”, but that doesn’t mean that Real Madrid have completely closed the door on Fernandez. The 15-time Champions League winner needs a world class midfielder after two trophyless seasons, and Fernandez fits the bill perfectly.
