2027 NFL Draft summer scouting report: Avery Johnson, QB, Kansas State

· Yahoo Sports

The wave of the mobile, playmaking quarterback is coming near in the NFL. Players like Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels are showing that success can be found by being able to run and gun. This bodes well for a prospect like Kansas State's Avery Johnson. Johnson is as strong a runner as it gets in this class, but has an underrated arm. What does his 2027 NFL Draft summer scouting report look like? Let's talk about it.

  • Height: 6'3"
  • Weight: 196 lbs
  • Recruiting rank: Four-star recruit, no 9 QB nationally in 2023
  • Hometown: Maize, Kansas
  • Games watched: UCF, Baylor, Texas Tech, Utah, Baylor

Strengths:

  • Immense upside as a runner. Averaged 4.4 yards per carry and posted eight touchdowns on the ground in 2025
  • Sneaky arm strength. He can push the ball down the field and has an underrated deep ball
  • Thrives in off-script moments
  • Shines in comeback moments
  • Strong first seven weeks of last season

Weaknesses:

  • The last four weeks were less than ideal, throwing for just three touchdowns on less than 58% completion percentage
  • Has to hit the short throws; struggles in a major way taking gas off the passes
  • Needs to work on situational awareness. Tries to fit passes into too tight windows when down
  • Must become more consistent in layering throws

Avery Johnson is going to make a fascinating camp body for one NFL team next season. If he can develop touch on his passes, we could see his draft stock rise and be a real choice at a QB2 for someone. I do believe that if a transfer to a bigger school had happened, he would have a little more noise around him. However, as things stand, he gets a fifth-round grade, but will be tuned in to his games this season.
