And investigators are concerned about the possibility of more alleged victims than those they have so far identified.

Toronto Police say officers responded to a call for a sexual assault in the downtown area shortly before 1 p.m. on Thursday.

“It is alleged that the accused sexually assaulted multiple adult female victims between the hours of 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. while on public transit in the downtown core,” police said in a statement released Saturday.

Police have not specified what TTC routes the incidents allegedly occurred on or whether the alleged incidents happened on buses, streetcars or subways.

Women were ‘strangers to the accused’

All of the alleged victims were “strangers to the accused” and none of them suffered any physical injuries, police explained.

“The accused obstructed police while performing their duties,” police alleged, without offering any further details.

As a result of the investigation, the accused was arrested.

Ashraful Alam, of Toronto, is charged with five counts of sexual assault and one count of obstructing a peace officer.

He was scheduled to appear in court for a bail hearing on Friday.

Alam is described as 5-foot-7 to 5-foot-10, with a medium build, black shaggy hair and a black beard. He was wearing a dark long-sleeved shirt, beige shorts and dark Birkenstock-style sandals.

Investigators are appealing for additional victims or witnesses to come forward and they have released images of the accused.

Anyone with information regarding this investigation is urged to call police at 416-808-5200 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
