Teoscar Hernández delivered a go-ahead grand slam in the bottom of the seventh on Friday night as Los Angeles turned a 3-0 deficit into a 4-3 victory. Shohei Ohtani left the game in the seventh inning after his right biceps tightened up after throwing a season-high 110 pitches in six innings, striking out nine while allowing nine baserunners. Ohtani won’t play on Saturday night as a precaution.
The Padres got out to a 3-0 lead, with Gavin Sheets driving in a run in the first, Jackson Merrill hitting a solo homer in the fourth, and Xander Bogaerts doubling home Merrill in the sixth. But starter Michael King ran into trouble in the seventh and reliever Adrian Morejon threw gasoline on the fire by loading the bases and serving up Hernández’s go-ahead homer. King was charged with two runs on three hits over six-plus innings.
The Dodgers go with right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto (8-5) on Saturday night as he enters with a 2.67 ERA and 0.891 WHIP in 15 starts and 97.2 innings. Right-hander Griffin Canning (1-5) gets the start for San Diego, coming in with a 7.09 ERA and 1.660 WHIP in 11 appearances and nine starts covering 47 innings.
